AS AMERICAN AS “YANKEE DOODLE DANDY” – AND JUST AS SWELL!
The first film in the wildly popular Andy Hardy series focuses more on Judge Hardy, as his decision to oppose a project that promises to bring jobs turns the small town of Carvel against him, including one of his daughters whose boyfriend is affected.
A large part of the cast were reunited after the success of Ah, Wilderness! (1936) and they have a relaxed, affable rapport. Lionel Barrymore (in his only performance as Hardy) and Mickey Rooney are particularly good in this simple but pleasant comedy where Father Always Knows Best.
1937-U.S. 69 min. B/W. Directed by George B. Seitz. Play: Aurania Rouverol (”Skidding”). Cast: Lionel Barrymore (James K. Hardy), Cecilia Parker (Marian Hardy), Eric Linden (Wayne Trent), Mickey Rooney (Andy Hardy), Charlie Grapewin, Spring Byington.
Trivia: Followed by 15 sequels, starting with You’re Only Young Once (1937).
