WHATCHA GONNA DO?
The Miami Vice concept survives even without Michael Mann, it would seem. Michael Bay, in his directing debut, makes good use of the sun-drenched Miami scenery and guarantees that action scenes are up to par in this buddy action movie.
Will Smith and Martin Lawrence are worth a look as the bad boy cops, but their hunt for stolen drugs is not as entertaining as that part of the film where they have to switch identities to keep a witness (Téa Leoni) to murder from bailing on them.
The movie was a hit, but it’s very familiar and doesn’t know when to call it a day.
1995-U.S. 126 min. Color. Directed by Michael Bay. Story: George Gallo. Music: Mark Mancina. Cast: Martin Lawrence (Marcus Burnett), Will Smith (Mike Lowrey), Téa Leoni (Julie Mott), Theresa Randle, Tchéky Karyo, Marg Helgenberger, Joe Pantoliano, Michael Imperioli.
Trivia: The film was originally written as a vehicle for Dana Carvey and Jon Lovitz. Arsenio Hall was also considered for the part of Mike Lowrey. Followed by three sequels, starting with Bad Boys II (2003).
Quote: “You know, you drive almost slow enough to drive Miss Daisy.” (Lawrence to Smith)
