Boyfriends and Girlfriends

Blanche (Emmanuelle Chaulet) is interested in Alexandre (François-Éric Gendron), whom she meets at a public bathhouse together with a new acquaintance, Léa (Sophie Renoir); however, Léa’s boyfriend Fabien (Éric Viellard) may be better suited?

The sixth and final entry in Éric Rohmer’s ”Comedies & Proverbs” series is a romantic drama that feels quite obvious from the start.

Still, a lightweight journey to the inevitable ending is enjoyable thanks to some of the conversations and the cast, especially Chaulet who finds the right approach in her portrait of Blanche who lives in a sterile area of Paris and feels deeply insecure about love.

1987-France. 103 min. Color. Written and directed by Éric Rohmer. Cast: Emmanuelle Chaulet (Blanche), Sophie Renoir (Léa), François-Éric Gendron (Alexandre), Éric Viellard (Fabien), Anne-Maure Meury.

Trivia: Original title: L’Ami de mon amie. Released in Britain and Canada as My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend. For a list of the other films in this series, see The Aviator’s Wife.
