China Moon

HE THOUGHT IT WAS PASSION. IT WAS DECEIT. HE THOUGHT IT WAS LOVE. IT WAS MURDER.

Florida homicide detective Kyle Bodine (Ed Harris) falls in love with a married woman (Madeleine Stowe); soon, the relationship becomes more dangerous.

Cinematographer John Bailey’s directing debut is a classically molded film noir thriller, with a guy who falls under the spell of a sexy woman and starts making dumb decisions.

Entertaining, with a twist near the end, and fine performances by Harris and Benicio del Toro as mentor and rookie. But there are very few surprises here and Stowe isn’t quite as mesmerizing as her character needs to be.

1994-U.S. 99 min. Color. Directed by John Bailey. Cast: Ed Harris (Kyle Bodine), Madeleine Stowe (Rachel Munro), Charles Dance (Rupert Munro), Benicio del Toro, Patricia Healy, Tim Powell, Pruitt Taylor Vince.

Trivia: Filmed in 1991.
