IT’S A HIGHLY DANGEROUS COMEDY!
When San Francisco librarian Gloria Mundy (Goldie Hawn) picks up a stranger who has car trouble, it’s the beginning of a complicated murder mystery.
An attempt to spoof Hitchcock movies that comes out as funny as High Anxiety (1977), complete with loads of references to the Master’s films, a lot of energy and colorful supporting characters, including an albino killer.
Never mind the thin story and its MacGuffin, there’s plenty of laughs and a charming duo in the shape of Hawn and Chevy Chase – and a now classic scene involving Dudley Moore as a randy conductor with an elaborate sex dungeon.
1978-U.S. 116 min. Color. Written and directed by Colin Higgins. Song: ”Ready to Take a Chance Again” (performed by Barry Manilow). Cast: Goldie Hawn (Gloria Mundy), Chevy Chase (Tony Carlson), Burgess Meredith (Mr. Hennessey), Brian Dennehy, Dudley Moore, Rachel Roberts.
Trivia: Farrah Fawcett was considered for the part of Gloria; Harrison Ford and Steve Martin as Tony; and Tim Conway for Moore’s part. Later a TV series, Foul Play (1981).
Last word: “It’s a mystery, an absurd comedy, a dear love stay, a nice, romantic, sweet story. Chevy and I were a good combination. It was no great acting feat, no challenge for me as an artist, but it was a good story, zesty, up, never a dull moment.” (Hawn, The New York Times)
