Hen

A thriller-drama starring a gutsy black chicken whom we follow from birth in an industrial farm in Greece; after escaping, she’s chased by a hungry fox and miraculously makes her way to a rural restaurant. It has a panoramic view of the Mediterranean, and that’s where the real darkness of the story emerges.

Migrant smuggling is a part of life here and it turns very deadly. It’s easy to view the film as a grim comment on how expendable both humans and animals are… but there’s also a lot of charm and humor here, with nifty use of music.

A remarkable feat by the filmmakers; eight chickens play the lead role.

2025-Hungary-Germany-Greece. 96 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by György Pálfi. Screenplay: György Pálfi, Zsófia Ruttkay. Cast: Yannis Kokiasmenos (Restaurant Owner), Maria Diakopanayotou (The Daughter), Argyris Pandazaras (The Partner), Antonis Kafetzopoulos.

Trivia: Original title: Kota.

Last word: “When tension arose on set, the hens always reacted very sensitively, and it was impossible to work with them. But when the energy flowed well, they did everything perfectly. I have never experienced so tangibly how powerful it is when a team can really work as a team, putting aside personal differences for a common goal.” (Pálfi, Variety)
