KPop Demon Hunters

Huntr/x, a K-pop girl group, work on their career while also hunting demons; soon they’re confronted by a sensational new boy band with a dark secret.

A very slick fantasy musical steeped in Korean culture, but still decidedly American. The attractive animation has its nods to anime and the world of K-pop. The latter plays a huge part on the successful soundtrack, where many real-life talents contribute to catchy hits that make the duels between the bands, and its members’ emotional turmoil, come alive.

The action-filled story has familiar beats, but it’s a lot of fun.

Last word: “For some of the songs, we did as many iterations, or close to, as on storyboards because you had to. Some of the story keeps changing and we needed some of the lyrics to be a little different, and when you do that the rhythm of it could change. I don’t know if the songwriters were told that from the start. Some of them were like, ‘What? That’s not how we work in pop music!’ But we do an animation!” (Kang, Cartoon Brew)
