When making this horror film, James Wan already had experience with a different kind of doll, Annabelle. This one has more in common with Child’s Play (1988) because of how it combines horror and comedy with cutting-edge technology; the fear of AI is a key theme.

Follows a formula, but clever and fun; M3GAN comes alive thanks to animatronics, two actors’ performances and digital effects.
