Mulan

LOYAL, BRAVE, TRUE.

When the Chinese Emperor demands one man from each family to build an army against an invasion, Mulan (Liu Yifei) volunteers, disguising herself as a man.

The live-action remake of the 1998 animated film got a mixed reception and also stirred some political controversy. The film itself is a disappointment, technically well-made and pretty close to the original, but blander.

Also, the #metoo-related decision to drop one of the story’s best ingredients, which gave the original a bisexual edge, is a mistake.

2020-U.S. 115 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Niki Caro. Music: Harry Gregson-Williams. Cast: Liu Yifei (Mulan), Donnie Yen (Commander Tung), Gong Li (Xianniang), Jason Scott Lee, Yoson An, Jet Li.

Trivia: Ming-Na Wen, who voiced Mulan in the 1998 film, has a cameo. Filmed in 2018 and delayed partly due to the COVID-19 pandemic; in the U.S. the film was released to Disney+, but in theaters internationally.
