Éric Rohmer’s perhaps most famous film from the 1980s invites us to romance and misunderstandings among a group of young people who frequent a beach on the northwestern coast of France.

The generous amount of half-naked actors added to the film’s success, I’m sure, but Rohmer focuses on hypocrisy among grown-ups, as seen through the eyes of teenager Pauline; emotions and jealousy collide, along with clashing philosophies when it comes to love.

Entertaining enough, helped by a terrific cast and seductive cinematography.
