Rust

REDEMPTION ISN’T GIVEN, IT’S TAKEN.

Wyoming, 1882; an aging gunslinger (Alec Baldwin) escapes with his 13-year-old grandson (Patrick Scott McDermott), hunted by a marshal, bounty hunters and Native Americans.

A Western that will forever be remembered for the death of its cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, who was accidentally shot by Baldwin using a gun as a prop. Bianca Cline deserves credit for stepping in and contributing to one of the film’s virtues: its earthy, grand visuals.

Baldwin and McDermott are fine, but the film suffers from a weak and protracted story.

2025-U.S. 140 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Joel Souza. Story: Joel Souza, Alec Baldwin. Cinematography: Halyna Hutchins, Bianca Cline. Cast: Alec Baldwin (Harland Rust), Patrick Scott McDermott (Lucas Hollister), Travis Fimmel (Fenton ”Preacher” Lang), Frances Fisher, Jake Busey, Josh Hopkins.

Trivia: Co-produced by Baldwin, who faced manslaughter charges after Hutchins’s death, along with the film’s armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed; she was found guilty, but Baldwin was acquitted.
