Son of the Pink Panther

CLUMSY HAS A COLOR ALL ITS OWN.

Chief Inspector Dreyfus (Herbert Lom) tries to find a kidnapped princess in the country of Lugash, but the inept, young policeman (Roberto Benigni) aiding him looks eerily familiar.

When director Blake Edwards decided to make a ninth entry in the series, several actors returned in their old parts but are less than engaging; that’s also true for Benigni who has a few good scenes but can’t match Peter Sellers.

Not a pleasant experience, even if Bobby McFerrin’s performance of the music theme is creative.

1993-U.S.-Italy. 93 min. Color. Widescreen. Directing, Story: Blake Edwards. Cast: Roberto Benigni (Jacques Gambrelli), Herbert Lom (Charles Dreyfus), Claudia Cardinale (Maria Gambrelli), Burt Kwouk, Debrah Farentino, Robert Davi.

Trivia: Edwards’s last film. In A Shot in the Dark (1964), the character of Maria Gambrelli was played by Elke Sommer; Cardinale played Princess Dala in The Pink Panther (1964). Kevin Kline, Gérard Depardieu and Rowan Atkinson were considered for the lead role.
