The Assessment

WOULD YOU PASS?

In the near future, no one can have children without a rigorous government process; a couple (Elizabeth Olsen, Himesh Patel) receive a visit from a woman (Alicia Vikander) who will assess their suitability as parents.

A sci-fi drama that takes us to a place where climate change has turned childbirth into a rare privilege because of limited resources. The more we learn about this set-up, the more we question the logic of it, but it holds our attention as we wonder what Vikander is up to with her childish roleplaying.

Ultimately, it’s a visually convincing dystopia whose tragic conclusions are moving, especially due to superior performances.

2025-U.S.-U.K.-Germany. 114 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Fleur Fortuné. Screenplay: Dave Thomas, Nell Garfath-Cox, John Donnelly. Cinematography: Magnus Nordenhof Jønck. Cast: Elizabeth Olsen (Mia), Alicia Vikander (Virginia), Himesh Patel (Aaryan), Minnie Driver, Indira Varma, Nicholas Pinnock.

Last word: “We worked on it for five years. First, I developed the characters, then the story, and then I could create the universe I wanted, but it was far from what it is now. The initial script was with Minority Report style screens and many other sci-fi elements that audiences are used to seeing. I wanted to create something that would put the story more in the front line and would be less about the effects.” (Fortuné, RogerEbert.com)
