In her feature directing debut, Victoria Verseau creates a poetic and painfully frank portrait of her journey as a trans woman, looking for acceptance and one, possibly, final piece of the puzzle: gender affirming surgery in Thailand. That’s not necessarily the answer to all of the issues a trans person goes through, as Verseau makes clear.
The film weaves together footage from the trip to Thailand she made years ago with a new one that she makes in the company of two younger trans women who are about to go through the same thing. Verseau also tries to come to grips with her grief after another trans friend who committed suicide.
As a film, it’s grim and highly personal, speaking more to a trans audience than anyone else.
