The Perfect Neighbor

It could have been a penetrating, thorough examination of the problematic stand-your-ground law, but this documentary prefers to settle for an emotionally stirring case to illustrate the law’s challenges.

It comes in the shape of the 2023 killing of Ajike Owens in Ocala, Florida, a Black woman who was shot by a white neighbor, Susan Lorincz. Bodycam footage from local police documented how cops were called over and over to the community because Lorincz kept accusing kids in the neighborhood of pestering her. Because of the footage, audiences get to draw their own conclusions about Lorincz and her motivations.

Compelling and very effective, even if parts of the film come across as ethically questionable.

2025-U.S. 97 min. Color-B/W. Directed by Geeta Gandbhir.
