Collateral Beauty

WE ARE ALL CONNECTED.

Audiences appreciated this Christmas-set drama about grief more than critics.

A star-studded cast embody characters who struggle with the loss of a child, letting your family know that you’re about to die, and… oh, the welfare of a company, which is what starts the film’s most ludicrous plot point, an attempt to convince Will Smith’s executive that he’s haunted by spirits.

Maudlin and contrived, the film looks generic and fails to deliver a message that holds all the ingredients together.

2016-U.S. 97 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by David Frankel. Cast: Will Smith (Howard Inlet), Kate Winslet (Claire Wilson), Edward Norton (Whit Yardsham), Michael Peña, Helen Mirren, Keira Knightley, Naomie Harris, Ann Dowd.

Trivia: Hugh Jackman and Ronney Mara were first set to star in the film; at one point, Johnny Depp and Rachel McAdams were also considered.
