Girl Climber

STRONGER THAN STEREOTYPES.

There’s no denying that this documentary lives in the shadow of the Oscar-winning Free Solo (2018), as it portrays another climber aiming to make their way up El Capitan, the vertical rock in Yosemite Park.

The film sort of embraces that comparison, because Alex Honnold, the climber who was the subject of Free Solo, plays an important part here as well, both as the film’s cinematographer and as an on-camera friend and climbing partner to Emily Harrington, the 33-year-old who becomes the first woman to free climb the ”Golden Gate” path up El Cap.

An engaging portrait of the stubborn and insanely daring Harrington who overcomes setbacks such as an accidental fall in 2019. Familiar, but well made.

2026-U.S.-Austria. 83 min. Color. Directed by Jon Glassberg. Cinematography: Alex Honnold.

Trivia: First shown at the Telluride festival, then released on Prime Video.
