England, 1381; unfair taxation is the last drop that causes a peasants’ revolt that spirals into a mighty threat against the 14-year-old King Richard II and his council of advisers.

Paul Greengrass once again takes on a violent chapter, but this one not ripped from recent headlines but history books. In spite of the U.S. distributor’s unfortunate attempt to market the film as an origin tale for Robin Hood (inspired by an epilogue that serves as a nod to medieval legends), the story remains fairly close to actual events.

Grim, muddy and forceful, with a stellar cast.
