A Madea Christmas

HO NO SHE DIDN’T.

Madea (Tyler Perry) and her great-niece Eileen (Anna Maria Horsford) travel to Alabama where Eileen’s daughter (Tika Sumpter) has plenty of problems, one of which is not having told her mother that she married a white man…

The seventh film to feature Perry’s drag act is easier to tolerate because he’s in good shape as the fearless matriarch and has a few funny scenes. For once, as a filmmaker, he doesn’t allow his sugary, predictable moralizing to take over the whole movie but finds a balance.

Still, as always, a clumsy way to address racism.

2013-U.S. 100 min. Color. Directing, screenplay, play: Tyler Perry. Cast: Tyler Perry (Madea), Anna Maria Horsford (Eileen Murphy), Tika Sumpter (Lacey Williams), Eric Lively, JR Lemon, Larry the Cable Guy, Kathy Najimy, Chad Michael Murray.

Trivia: Alternative title: Tyler Perry’s A Madea Christmas. Co-produced by Perry. Madea next appeared in Boo! A Madea Halloween (2016).
