The Amateur

DON’T UNDERESTIMATE HIM.

When CIA analyst Charlie Heller’s (Rami Malek) wife is murdered, he concocts a plan for revenge – even though he has zero field expertise.

The novel was filmed once before, as a 1981 Canadian thriller. This American remake takes us to different places around the world, as a proper spy film should, and has its action-filled moments.

But the central premise is hard to buy and Malek lacks the charisma needed to make us care for his inexperienced hero, even if Laurence Fishburne offers support as his seasoned mentor.

2025-U.S. 124 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by James Hawes. Novel: Robert Littell. Cast: Rami Malek (Charlie Heller), Laurence Fishburne (Robert ”Hendo” Henderson), Rachel Brosnahan (Sarah Heller), Caitríona Balfe, Michael Stuhlbarg, Holt McCallany, Jon Bernthal. Cameo: Marthe Keller.

Trivia: Co-produced by Malek. At one point, Hugh Jackman was set to star.
