Glowing Stars

Liv (Annika Hallin) and her 13-year-old daughter (Josefine Mattsson) are planning a trip to Thailand, but when Liv’s cancer gets worse they temporarily move in with her strict mother (Anki Lidén).

Lisa Siwe’s feature directing debut was based on an award-winning young adult book about the challenge any kid would have losing a parent while at the same time navigating all the emotions and hormones of a 13-year-old.

The film has familiar beats, but still comes across as realistic and moving, with an excellent cast, not least Lidén as the grandmother whose annoying traits conceal the fact that she cares deeply.

2009-Sweden. 89 min. Color. Directed by Lisa Siwe. Screenplay: Linn Gottfridsson. Novel: Johanna Thydell. Cast: Josefine Mattsson (Jenna), Mika Berndtsdotter Ahlén (Ullis), Annika Hallin (Liv), Anki Lidén (Ingrid), Samuel Haus, Judith Rindeskog, Måns Nathanaelson.

Trivia: Original title: I taket lyser stjärnorna.

Guldbagge Awards: Best Director, Supporting Actress (Lidén).

Last word: “I started reading Johanna’s book at home in bed one night; it was 10.45 PM and I couldn’t put it down. I cried and cried and had my husband not been next to me I would have howled. Simply put, I became obsessed with this story. I rode my bike to my best friend who’s a screenwriter and threw it into her mail box.” (Siwe, Dagens Nyheter)
