Bugonia

IT ALL STARTS WITH SOMETHING MAGNIFICENT.

Conspiracy theorist Teddy Gatz (Jesse Plemons) and his intellectually disabled cousin (Aidan Delbis) kidnap the CEO (Emma Stone) of a pharmaceutical company and tell her to contact her people, an alien race in the Andromeda galaxy.

A remake of the South Korean film Save the Green Planet! (2003) that turns into ripe material for Yorgos Lanthimos and his muse Stone. A darkly amusing thriller for all the misanthropes out there, with an absurd and bloody final act that still offers hope for the bees and our planet, at least.

Stone and Plemons, who keep clashing, are first-rate as the corporate shark and the greasy-haired loner with a tragic past.

2025-U.S.-Ireland-South Korea. 118 min. Color. Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos. Screenplay: Will Tracy. Cinematography: Robbie Ryan. Makeup: Torsten Witte. Cast: Emma Stone (Michelle Fuller), Jesse Plemons (Teddy Gatz), Aidan Delbis (Don), Stavros Halkias, Alicia Silverstone, Cedric Dumornay.

Trivia: Co-produced by Lanthimos, Stone and Ari Aster.

European Film Awards: Best Makeup & Hair Artist.

Last word: “This is a film about people who are trying to convince each other of their worldview. As each layer is revealed about the characters, who you believe in a given situation changes. You find yourself trying to figure out where you stand throughout the entire film. So when you ask about stewardship, I think the structure I’ve created has allowed the audience to be very personally engaged and bring their own baggage into the film. I’m inviting them to bring themselves into this story and to think and perceive about this ever-shifting situation within the narrative.” (Lanthimos, RogerEbert.com)
