Eternity

YOU CAN ONLY CHOOSE ONE.

In the afterlife, Joan (Elizabeth Olsen) has to choose between spending eternity with the man (Miles Teller) she was married to for 67 years, or the one (Callum Turner) who married her in the 1950s and then died in the Korean war.

If this film were made in 1995, it would have starred Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan and made $200 million at the box office. Things have changed, but not necessarily the quality of romantic comedies. Olsen is the standout here, but the cast as a whole elevates this sweet and funny film that builds its version of afterlife in amusing, relatable ways.

Goes on a little too long as it reaches a predictable conclusion, but still worthwhile.

2025-U.S. 114 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by David Freyne. Screenplay: Pat Cunnane, David Freyne. Cast: Miles Teller (Larry Cutler), Elizabeth Olsen (Joan Cutler), Callum Turner (Luke), Da’Vine Joy Randolph, John Early, Olga Merediz.

Trivia: Co-executive produced by the two stars.

Last word: “I think that was always the most important thing to me: that there is no right or wrong answer. No matter what happens, somebody’s going to be heartbroken, and you have to allow that to exist and, yeah, there’s no easy out. And I think that makes the ending feel so emotional and so great when it actually comes.” (Freyne, Slash Film)
