A GOOD GOODBYE… IT’S ALL THAT MATTERS.
Kate Winslet’s directing debut became a family affair, as the script was written by her son.
It is also the story of a family coming together as the cancer-stricken mother (Helen Mirren) lies on her deathbed in hospital. They’re a rowdy bunch, including three sisters who are very different. At first, there’s a danger of some of the characters getting stuck as caricatures, but the script overcomes that threat and the film ultimately delivers as a well-acted drama about the challenges and rewards of having a family.
Too manipulative at times perhaps, but the Christmas setting is a nice fit.
