Evil Dead Rise

MOMMY LOVES YOU TO DEATH.

After an earthquake, teenager Danny (Morgan Davies) finds a mysterious book and a record that will unleash demons in the L.A. apartment building where he and his family live.

The third Evil Dead sequel makes us forget all about the 2013 remake and breathes new life into the concept. The results are massively bloody (and bloody entertaining), as the mother of the household (a very enjoyable Alyssa Sutherland) becomes obsessed and wreaks havoc on her kids and their aunt (Lily Sullivan).

Dangerously close to losing its grip on us near the end, but recovers and reconnects cleverly with the film’s first scenes. All in all, diabolical fun.

2023-U.S. 97 min. Color. Widescreen. Written and directed by Lee Cronin. Cast: Lily Sullivan (Beth), Alyssa Sutherland (Ellie), Morgan Davies (Danny), Gabrielle Echols (Bridget), Nell Fisher, Richard Crouchley. Voice of Bruce Campbell.

Trivia: Co-executive produced by Campbell and Sam Raimi. Followed by Evil Dead Burn (2026).

Last word: “I’m a fan of the movies, but I had no interest in making another Evil Dead movie at the cabin, because they’d done a reboot. So I wasn’t gonna reboot a reboot, and if you’re gonna change it up, you may as well go to the other end of the spectrum. The top floor of an apartment in downtown LA is about as far as you can get from a cabin in the woods without leaving the planet. So for me it actually felt like a very obvious choice, and like an obvious place to go.” (Cronin, Indiewire)
