The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane

ASK HER NO QUESTIONS AND NOBODY DIES.

13-year-old Rynn Jacobs (Jodie Foster) recently moved with her father, a poet, to a small seaside town… but the neighbors begin to wonder why they’re always meeting Rynn, never her dad.

This adaptation of the novel was originally meant to be a play and parts of the film feel like it; a lot of the action takes place in one room. We learn early on that there’s mystery surrounding the bright teenager with a dark past; she’s played to perfection by Foster the same year she also appeared in Taxi Driver.

A strange, eerie, sometimes even sweet mix of several genres; mostly a psychological drama about vulnerable youth.

1976-Canada-France. 91 min. Color. Directed by Nicolas Gessner. Screenplay, Novel: Laird Koenig. Cast: Jodie Foster (Rynn Jacobs), Martin Sheen (Frank Hallet), Alexis Smith (Cora Hallet), Mort Shuman, Scott Jacoby.

Last word: “I saw [Foster] in Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore and I was completely captivated. I signed her immediately without an audition because I was completely confident in her talent.” (Gessner, audio commentary track for the film)
