La Belle Année

A hybrid documentary that started out as a project where French-Swedish filmmaker Angelica Ruffier planned to look up her old teacher Sylvie (who affected her deeply as a child) and possibly go hiking with her.

Then came reality crashing in the shape of her father’s death, which brought her and her brother back to Avignon where they grew up before being sent away to Sweden because of dad’s abusive behavior. Ruffier decided to fuse both stories in one film, creating a dreamlike impression of Sylvie, inspired by Louise Brooks, and confronting the memories of childhood and her dad.

Intimate, but the stories are underwhelming, and a bad fit.

2026-Sweden-Norway. 95 min. Color-B/W. Written and directed by Angelica Ruffier.
