A medical courier (Austin Abrams) is assigned a package to deliver to a hospital in Raccoon City, which means a long drive on a late, snowy evening; unspeakable horrors await Bryan.

After seven screen adaptations of the video game that were either bad or at best mediocre, we finally got a movie that delivers the goods, offering scares, a relentless pace and lots of laughs. Some die-hard fans of the game were skeptical, but who cares; the only weak part of the film is the abrupt ending.

Abrams is perfect in the lead, grunting and cursing his way through one bloody challenge after the other. Darkly shot and scored, to great effect.

Last word: “I wanted to prove that I didn’t need to do some sort of narrative trickery, that I could just follow one person from Point A to Point B and still be compelling. The real challenge of Resident Evil was, can I floor it at minute six and not take my foot off the gas? If I could do that, holy sh*t, that would be a fun challenge for me to do. And there are a couple of moments in this movie where [Austin’s character] does have a quiet moment of rest, so maybe I failed. But I love the result.” (Cregger, Deadline)
