THEY WERE DIVIDED BY WAR. HE UNITED THEM IN SONG.
In a small Yorkshire town during World War I, a choral group hires a new talent to lead them, Henry Guthrie (Ralph Fiennes), in spite of the fact that he used to live in Germany.
Fiennes is perfect as a man who goes against the nationalistic wartime spirit – the fact that he’s gay, intellectual and admires the culture of the nation Britain is at war with complicates the matter further. Somewhat reminiscent of films like The Full Monty (1997); charming, even if it doesn’t deliver on that level.
Excellent supporting cast, including Roger Allam as the alderman who loves to sing but isn’t terribly good at it.
2025-U.K. 113 min. Color. Directed by Nicholas Hytner. Screenplay: Alan Bennett. Cast: Ralph Fiennes (Henry Guthrie), Roger Allam (Bernard Duxbury), Mark Addy (Fyton), Alun Armstrong, Simon Russell Beale, Robert Emms.
