Tehran resident Mahin (Lily Farhadpour) is in her 70s, a widow for the past three decades, who suddenly decides to take a chance and invite a taxi driver (Esmail Mehrabi) she spots into her home.
A drama-comedy that offers a sweet look into an elderly woman’s daily life in Tehran. She has a circle of friends and is not afraid to stand up to the despicable morality police that target the youth… but she’s also lonely, just like the cab driver she befriends. Their evening together is so charming you never want it to end.
What comes next is shocking but ultimately endearing, in a tragicomic way. Brilliant, moving performances by the two leads.
2024-Iran-France-Sweden-Germany. 97 min. Color. Written and directed by Maryam Moghaddam, Behtash Sanaeeha. Cast: Lily Farhadpour (Mahin), Esmail Mehrabi (Faramarz).
Trivia: Original title: Keyk-e mahbub-e man. The directors and the producer received prison sentences after making this film, which was considered by the dictatorship as ”propaganda against the Islamic republic”.
Last word: “To get permission to shoot outside scenes, we applied for a short film under someone else’s name – not our name, because we knew we wouldn’t get permission – and even wrote a [fake] short film that the authorities would accept. We told [the cast and crew], ‘If you think it’s worth it to be honest on a movie for the first time in 45 years, come with us.’” (Moghaddam, AnotherMag.com)
