Marty: Life is Short

Riding a wave of documentaries about our most beloved (or, in the case of Chevy Chase, complicated) comedians, this is another well-made, funny and moving look at a person who’s had more than his share of grief.

In Martin Short’s case, there’s nothing negative to say about his personality. By all accounts, Short is genuinely adored and a guy other creatives love to hang out with. The film invites us into his parties and social life in his summer home on Lake Rosseau; there’s even a home movie here shot by Spielberg, starring Short and Tom Hanks as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

But darkness exists for Short in the shape of tremendous losses; we learn how he’s managed to carry on. Truly inspirational to behold.

2026-U.S. VOD. 99 min. Color. Directed by Lawrence Kasdan.

Trivia: Co-produced by Kasdan; co-executive produced by Ron Howard. Those interviewed include Steve Martin, Steven Spielberg, Kate Capshaw, Tom Hanks, Paul Shaffer, Catherine O’Hara, Eugene Levy and John Mulaney.

Last word: “I knew that he had this history, and yet I was fascinated, from the time that we got to know each other [in 1987], by how upbeat and positive he was, despite real challenges. The thing I admire most about him, I think, is his resilience. That’s really the subtext of the whole movie … how do we recover when things go bad? It’s not that complicated when things are going great, but nobody has a life where everything goes great.” (Kasdan, USA Today)
