Doctor Sleep

DARE TO GO BACK.

Three decades after the events in The Shining, Danny Torrance (Ewan McGregor) is a recovering alcoholic who is contacted telepathically by a girl (Kyliegh Curran); together they face a lethal threat from a group of quasi-immortals.

This adaptation honors Stephen King’s legacy, but also the classic Stanley Kubrick interpretation (that King hated). Mike Flanagan holds it together; it’s a long movie, but has plenty of good thrills (boosted by a very faithful return to Kubrick’s vision of the Overlook Hotel near the end), addressing alcoholism and loneliness in relevant ways.

2019-U.S. 151 min. Color. Written, directed and edited by Mike Flanagan. Novel: Stephen King. Cast: Ewan McGregor (Danny Torrance), Rebecca Ferguson (Rose the Hat), Kyliegh Curran (Abra Stone), Carl Lumbly, Zahn McClarnon, Emily Alyn Lind, Bruce Greenwood, Jacob Tremblay, Henry Thomas.

Trivia: Co-executive produced by King. Chris Evans and Jeremy Renner were reportedly considered as Danny; Danny Lloyd, who played the kid in the original film, has a cameo. Also released in a 24 minutes longer version.
