In 1932, Boris Karloff’s resurrected mummy went searching for a lady in modern-day society; 70 years later a new undead is wreaking havoc, now with computer-animated powers.

The filmmakers updated the mummy legend as a silly Raiders of the Lost Ark wannabe, with 1920’s adventurer Rick O’Connell (Brendan Fraser) and Egyptologist Evelyn Carnahan (Rachel Weisz) stumbling onto the evil and quite dead Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo).

Too much time passes before we even get to see the mummy and the bad jokes and empty characters hurt the movie, but visual effects and Fraser compensate.

Trivia: Clive Barker, Joe Dante and George A. Romero were considered for directing duties; in Dante’s version, Daniel Day-Lewis would have played the mummy. Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt and Matt Damon were considered for the lead. Followed by two sequels, starting with The Mummy Returns (2001), and an animated series, The Mummy (2001-2003).
