Kiss Me, Stupid

Famous Vegas entertainer Dino (Dean Martin) is headed for Los Angeles, but is forced to make a stop in Climax, Nevada where an amateur songwriting team try to get the womanizer’s attention by hiring a local prostitute (Kim Novak).

One of Billy Wilder’s worst films was attacked in its day for having too “loose” moral values, but its biggest problem is the basic concept. Very hard to believe in, barely any laughs and way overlong.

Martin sends himself up, but Ray Walston is funnier.

1964-U.S. 122 min. B/W. Widescreen. Produced and directed by Billy Wilder. Screenplay: Billy Wilder, I.A.L. Diamond. Play: Anna Bonacci (“L’Ora della Fantasia”). Cast: Dean Martin (Dino), Ray Walston (Orville Spooner), Kim Novak (Polly the Pistol), Felicia Farr, Cliff Osmond, Barbara Pepper… Mel Blanc.

Trivia: Peter Sellers was first cast as Orville, but a series of heart attacks made him drop out; Jack Lemmon was also offered the role. Novak’s role was originally written for Marilyn Monroe. The story was also filmed in Italy as Wife for a Night (1952).
